Unit 2 SBS #9-22 (pg. 151)

9. Active metals are more difficult to process and refine because the are more readily reactive than less active metals.

10. We haven't done this lab yet.

11. Metals are unstable by themselves so they tend to combine with other elements to make a more stable element.

12. Lithium, Potassium, and Calcium are the most reactive elements so those reactions would most likely occur.

13. Equation 2 represents a reaction that is more likely to occur since the electrical charge and atoms are balanced.

14. a. It would be a bad idea because iron is more reactive.

15. Oxidation is when an ion loses one or more electrons. Reduction is when an ion gains electrons.

16. a. Au3-   +    3E    →    Au

      b. V  →  V4-   + 4E+
      c. Cu   →  Cu2+    +   2E-

17. a. Reduction
      b. Oxidation
      c. Reduction

18. a. Nickel has been oxidized.
      b. Zinc has been reduced.
      c. Zinc is the reducing agent in this reaction

19. a. Mercury has been oxidized.
      b. Potassium has been reduced.
      c. Mercury is the oxidizing agent in this reaction.

20. a. Al    +    Cr3+     →     Al3+
      b. Mn2+    +   Mg   →     Mn

21. a. Electrometallurgy uses electricity.
      b. Pyrometallurgy uses thermal hear.
      c. Hydrometallurgy uses water.

22. a. Electrometallurgy
      b. Electrometallurgy
